'Nature is my greatest teacher. Through years of observing the underwater world through the lens, an intelligent, harmonious world appeared. To my pleasure, the inhabitants began to unveil their 'personalities', revealing characteristics of being shy or bold, curious, fearful or even flamboyant. What I was not always able to capture on film became my inspiration as an artist.'
Kimberley Payard
Kimberley Payard is a Far North Queensland artist whose love affair with the sea goes back as far as she can remember. For nearly two decades she has lived and worked on the Great Barrier Reef as an adventure diver and professional underwater photographer. Her tales of adventures and colourful images from countless dives exploring the reef have been published in books and magazines around the world.
In 1998 her interest as a visual artist expanded from photography to painting where she was classically trained in the art of watercolour with private tuition by master watercolour artist Carol-lyn Bond. Kimberley then set out on her own to explore water and colour, moving away from the more traditional use of the medium and into developing her own strong and colourful style. Presenting a unique view of the reef, her paintings offer a closer look into the the heart and soul of the largest thing on the planet, the Great Barrier Reef.
Being an artist and a photographer allows Kimberley to reveal two different sides of the Great Barrier Reef; the beauty and splendour that is readily presented through the lens of the camera and her personal experience of being a part of nature on the reef that is expressed through her watercolour paintings.
